"Edward, I'm done with this whole diabetes thing."
If I've heard it once, I have heard it a hundred times, "I'm DONE with diabetes."
These are usually the words, thoughts, and feelings many of my patients and clients express before working with me. Although it's a concise and straightforward statement, the meaning behind it runs deep and is filled with years of frustration and overwhelm.
The term "I'm Done with Diabetes" represents the dissatisfaction one has with the standards of Diabetes care, medication side effects, and the steady progression of the disease.
"I'm done with Diabetes" represents the fatigue from hundreds of unpleasant insulin injections, countless finger sticks, rescheduled appointments, standing in long pharmacy lines, and arguing on the phone with insurance companies.
"I'm done with Diabetes" is code talk for being fed up with the uncontrollable mood swings, cravings, fatigue, and an overall feeling of hopelessness and helplessness.

I attended the University of South Florida and earned my Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Science. From there, I went on to Memphis, TN, to complete my Master's Degree to become a Physician Assistant.
From the very beginning of my career, the objective was obvious, radically improving the health conditions of my community, By Any Means Necessary.
Although the majority of my focus was on chronic conditions in general, so many things just didn't make any sense, especially with type 2 diabetes.
The questions I had around the Diabetes standards of care began to heightened when I had multiple patients that required me to decrease their medications. This decrease in medications wasn't because they were getting worse, it was because the meal plan and exercise regimen I gave them improved their health.
However, there was one patient named Barry, who stood out above everyone else. I had placed him on a Fasting regime mainly because I believed in the endless health benefits but also because of his financial situation. In less than 90 days, Barry had lost 36 pounds, lost 6 inches off his waist, was taken off all medications including insulin, and was no longer diabetic!
I brought this to the attention of many other doctors, PA's Nurse Practitioners, and people in general, and the consensus was clear, cognitive dissonance was at play. Many of them tried to downplay the fact that I had such a small sample size of patients who were no longer diabetic, but there were two things wrong with that thinking. One, those numbers were quickly growing. Two, TYPE 2 DIABETES WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A PERMANENT DIAGNOSIS!!
